The Eyes Have It—
Understanding Mental Languages

Perhaps you have been told that maintaining good eye contact is a key to positive communication. More accurately, utilizing appropriate eye contact is. Extreme eye contact is abnormal and may even be considered rude by some customers. Your eyes have to move in order for your mind to work. If you attempt to prevent your eyes from moving, it will actually impair your ability to think and respond to others. Normal eye contact allows you to look directly at your customer when you are speaking or when they are speaking to you. When you are asked a question and need to think, it is normal to pause and look up to the side or downward. The direction that you look will depend upon your preferred mode of communication. Think about this, “What year did you enter the first grade?” Did you feel your eyes move. If they moved up, you are what we call a visual processor. You prefer information given to you in a visual mode. Visual people demand eye contact. If you look to the side, you are an auditory processor. You prefer to receive information by sound or conversation. Eye contact is not as important to this group. If you looked down, you are a kinesthetic processor. You prefer to get a feel for the information that is presented and will prefer hands on demonstrations where you are involved. This group is often misread because of their apparent lack of eye contact.
